Stress, Food Linked To Child Obesity

CHICAGO (CBS 2) You've probably heard a lot about high-calorie diets and lack of exercise being blamed for the increasing problem of childhood obesity. Some health experts say a key part of the problem is being overlooked, and that's the connection between teens, stress and food.

"If I was sad or mad I would definitely like grab like chips or ice cream," said eigth grader Stephanie Cala. Stephanie's not alone. Research recently published in the Journal of Health Psychology shows stressed out kids overeat and choose more unhealthy foods than their calmer classmates.

Dr. Alvin Poussaint, a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, says parents need to watch for underlying issues when their kids pack on the pounds.

"I think in many of the anti-obesity campaigns now they're not talking about the stress and depression and the emotional side of eating," Poussaint said.

Some teens are finding help through websites that help work through the underlying reasons they overeat. Others find weight management programs with lessons on diet and exercise and group therapy sessions helpful.

"Being able to communicate and open up with your problems could help any addiction. These children are just addicted to food," said Beth Braun, psychological director of KidShape.

Stephanie chose a private nutritionist who's helping her find other ways to soothe her stress such as music, sports, and cultivating friendships. "Talk to a friend more rather than eat something because if you eat something it's not like the food's going to give you advice back, but your friend might," she said.

Experts agree that in order for any weight loss program to be successful in the long-run, the child must be committed and parents and guardians must be involved as well.
