Aquatic centre weighs up McDonald‘s sponsorship

The YMCA Aquatic Centre in the central Victorian city of Ballarat is reviewing its sponsorship by the McDonald's food chain because of concerns about childhood obesity.

McDonald's contributed funding to the construction of the centre and tickets to its learn-to-swim program include a discount fast food offer.

Aquatic centre manager Colin Hunter says he met McDonald's Wendouree store management yesterday to discuss a more appropriate form of sponsorship.

He says the company is aware of the pressure to promote healthy food, instead of junk food.

"The childhood obesity issue has been in the news, and we have for some time now been offering some programs called 'healthy kids' programs to try and help address that issue," he said.

"We're trying to encourage all the programs that we have at the aquatic centre, not only obviously the physical activity, but the lifestyle side as well, food choices and lifestyle that go along with a healthy person."
